This photograph shows an aviator taking carrier pigeons aboard his aircraft prior to a flight for use in the event he was forced down by mechanical trouble and needed to get word back to NAS Anacostia.
They scrambled into their life raft, beginning an epic ordeal in which they survived for 34 days at sea before making it ashore in the Danger Islands. Their raft is now prominently displayed in the museum, some of the tally marks counting the days adrift still visible. The squadron scoreboard as it appeared the following year shows the squadron made good use of the airplane! In April , the AM-1 Mauler now on display in the museum set an unofficial record for payload lifted when it carried an ordnance load of 10, pounds.
